With this season done and dusted, focus has already turned to the next campaign, when we welcome two new faces to the A-League family.
North Queensland Fury and Gold Coast United arrive to take the league up to ten teams, and they are sure to spice things up a little.
The Coast’s wealthy owner Clive Palmer has already tried to stir things up, with claims that his side will win the Toilet Seat at the first time of asking and could probably go unbeaten to boot.
The Fury have gone about their business in a quieter nature, but will draw a lot of focus after making the biggest signing in A-League history in Robbie Fowler.
Having a look at how their squads are shaping up, it looks like both sides will be going in different directions.
Ian Ferguson appears to be building a hard-working squad as the Townsville-based Fury bed themselves into the competition.
A number of Sydney players will make their way north, with Brendon Santalab and Robbie Middleby in particular needing to make an impact on the side. The experience of Middleby, Ufuk Talay and import signing should help the club to make a good start.
Wilson will add steel to the backline, while going forward Felipe will need to hit the ground running to provide Fowler (below) with opportunities.

But “God”, as the Liverpool fans call him, will be key. He has a history of hip problems, but if he can stay fit and chances are created for him, he will score goals. A run of games from the star man and Fury may just be able to challenge for a play-off place at the season’s end.
Gold Coast, on the other hand, should be able to challenge the heavyweight of the A-League.
Palmer has put a lot of money into the side, and they have attracted some impressive players for this level of football.
They have signed well through all departments of their side. Jess Vanstratten is a quality keeper who could push for a Socceroos call-up now he will be playing regular games, while the likes of Adam Griffiths, Michael Thwaite and Daniel Piorkowski are part of a strong-looking defence.
Jason Culina, as everyone knows, is a massive signing. He is still at his peak, and has played a big role at PSV for a number of years now. He is a class above this level, but credit to him for returning and helping to boost the profile of the A-League. He will be the hub of the side, making things happen and controlling games for the Coast.
Up front, United will have the strongest strikeforce in the competition. Shane Smeltz walked off with the Golden Boot for a Wellington side with far less quality, and Tahj Minniecon’s speed and skill will give defenders a torrid time.

The returning Joel Porter (above) has been banging in goals for Hartlepool on a regular basis for four years now, and with his ability could outscore Smeltz and find himself at the top of the goal charts.
Gold Coast’s squad is almost complete, whereas Fury have a number of spots still to fill. Another solid defender and some midfield creativity (ideally with pace), along with a partner for Fowler are still needed.
As it stands, United look like serious title challengers immediately, while Fury may have to use this year as a platform to a finals challenge in their second season. We must wait and see.
Whatever happens, both sides will add to the strength and quality of the A-League, and that is the most important thing.
So welcome, newboys, and give us something to shout about.
